June 2026 | Men’s Health Awareness Month
I would never presume to know what it’s like to be a man. But my life experience has
shown me that men are often reticent about proactively pursuing healthcare.
My husband works a hard physical job and when he comes home, I often expect him to
do other hard physical things in and around the house. Obviously, the toll that labor
takes on his body is great and at some point, will wear him down.
Men need and deserve to practice self-care too. Men, whether they are in our
households or not, should be encouraged to proactively do things like make certain
colonoscopies are up to date, an annual physical is done and prostrates are checked
regularly.
Recently, my beloved better half had to have a lung scan. He dreaded it for the month
and a half that he had to wait. He did it and when the results came back, he was
extremely happy when the provider gave him an inhaler and an overall clean bill of
health. He said it was all worth the “peace of mind” he received and it gave him a
starting point to seek smoking cessation help.
