October 2026 | October is Breast Cancer Awareness and Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Why all the pink ribbons? Do you know that 1 out of every 8 women in the U.S. will receive a breast cancer diagnosis?
On Wednesday this week I will visit my own provider about an odd mole that has been hanging around the girls for the past few years. Decades ago, I probably would not have given it a thought, but because of all the public outreach and prevention that includes detection, treatment has made a huge dent in the success of breast cancer survival rates.
Why all the purple ribbons? For over 40 years, The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence has asked us to stop in October and be aware that every 15 seconds in our nation, an act of battery occurs, damaging children, women, families and causing injury to our entire community. There are many community resources to get help. South Dakota Urban Indian Health is one of those resources.
