From Where I Sit – August 2026

August 2026 | Breastfeeding, Immunizations, Child Eye and Health Safety Month

Our Lakota traditions tell us that our children, our Wakanyeja (sacred beings), are the most recent visitors from CREATOR, therefore are the most sacred. But it’s not just Lakota that holds little ones in such great reverence. Most human societies recognize the specialness of our little ones.

It is in that spirit that nationally, we acknowledge August to be the month when we promote the awareness of breastfeeding, immunizations and child eye health and safety.

Little ones are often unable to articulate to us when they are unwell. They are new enough to the world that they are unaware of the protection they need from things like disease, and other environmental hazards. It is up to us as big people to nurture, protect and make certain they have met all their health needs.
