USD 3rd-Year Medical Students Experience Cultural Immersion at SDUIH

Last week SDUIH in Sioux Falls had the pleasure of hosting five 3rd-year medical students from the University of South Dakota as part of their cultural immersion experience. During their three-day visit, the students engaged in a wide range of activities designed to deepen their understanding of the unique health needs and cultural practices of our Native American relatives.

During their time with us, the students:

  • Learned about traditional medicines: They explored the importance of these medicines in our community and how they are integrated into our methods of care.
  • Participated in a roundtable discussion: Our knowledgeable medical providers shared insights into the health issues and barriers faced by our relatives, fostering an open and informative dialogue.
  • Joined our Walking Group: As part of our Special Diabetes Program for Indians (SDPI) grant, the students learned about the importance of physical activity on health and wellness.
  • Took part in Beading and Sewing: They experienced firsthand the cultural significance of these traditional crafts.
  • Engaged in street outreach with the Wo’okiye team: They saw how we connect with and support our unhoused relatives.

The students were incredibly engaged and eager to learn. We were glad to have them with us. We hope this experience will enrich their future medical careers with a deeper appreciation for cultural humility and the diverse needs of the communities they serve!
