SDUIH Supports The LGBTQ+ Community

At SDUIH, we emphatically accept and promote the saying “mitakuye oyasin” or “we are all related”. Thus, you’ll hear many SDUIH staff refer to anyone we serve, whether they’re an official patient or a community member, as a “relative” and our goal is to treat everyone we serve as such. SDUIH recognizes and values our Two Spirit, non-binary, and transgender relatives as playing a pivotal role in our communities and as members in our communities who deal with increased health disparities and health risks. Staff, volunteers, board members, and contractors will be educated on the use of correct pronouns, names, and identities of all members of our communities in order to create an inclusive and safe place to work, learn, and receive care.
