Preparing for Winter

Preparing for Winter

Winter weather was just as extreme on the prairie before colonization. Preparing for it was part of the daily existence of D/L/Nakota people. Getting ready for winter began in September. This involved harvesting and drying corn, berries, meat, and fish, to store underground.

Preparing for winter now means checking in on our winter gear and warm clothing.

Winter Weather Clothing Checklist

  • Long-sleeved shirt
  • Long pants
  • Sweater
  • Boots or sturdy shoes (waterproof)
  • Socks
  • Warm coat or jacket with hood
  • Stocking hat
  • Mittens or gloves
  • Scarf

It’s also a good idea to make sure your car is ready for snow, too. Do your tires have good tread to keep you steady on slippery roads? Is your heater working? Are your brakes in check?

If you’re in need of some warm clothing, SDUIH has a limited amount of some winter gear available for free in our Trading Post at our clinics. Please stock up appropriately next time you’re at the clinic!

Do you have gently used coats, boots, hats or gloves? Drop them off with the front desk and we will find them good homes!
